play Piano No. 2 (intrumental)
from Mysterious Light - Cogtone 009 - 1999I wrote this piece in an apartment I had in Chicago in 1975 at 3026 N Seminary...2nd floor...when that was a fairly rough and poor neighborhood. I was a long haired hippie kid just starting to write songs and going to "hootenannies" at the Earl of Old Town and Steve Goodman's club, Somebody Else's Troubles. I worked at an organic bakery and cafe called the Bread Shop. That spot is now home to the fabulous Chicago Diner on Halsted and Roscoe. I had three bedrooms, one sleeping bag, a rocking chair, a Martin D-18 and the only real stereo I've ever owned, and that was brief. There was a beat up old upright in the living room and I taught myself enough on it to write this tune. I've carried it around with me as the only piano song I knew until I learned a couple of Tom Waits and Jackson Browne tunes. I've tried adding lyrics to this a couple times but nothing stuck.
