i lost my job, lost my wife
lost my will to drink & fight
i wander up to strangers
i'm at the mercy of their kindness
haven't eaten in three days or nights
i smoke cigarettes it kills the appetite
sleep as much as i can ... kills the time

i will make a sign and spend the day
on the exit ramp of the old highway
bless everyone who spares me change/fills my plate
god knows i lost my dignity
i can no longer find the ability
to feed myself oh no

i'm sleeping in a burned out house
just across the railroad tracks
got a newspaper pillow
and a new sleeping bag
i stole it from a pickup truck
parked outside the underground
they forgot to lock up the back
they should know better than that.

with what little left i've got
i still hope one day to get a shot
raise myself back up from where i've fallen
'til then i will work the streets
bum cigarettes & clean windshields
and live here at the mercy of your kindness
