Notes From the Road
3-28-10 Chompers - Phase One Completed
Thank you Dr. Oscar Ruiz Mares!
Phase one of my dental reconstruction is now complete and after three weeks on the border I'm heading home to resume speed. I can't believe the transformation. This has been a bit of a saga for me. Long before I shattered my leg (last March) my dental situation had become severe, but without insurance or savings there was nothing I could do but carry on. It had gotten to the point where it could become life threatening and I took what cash on hand I had available and headed to Juarez, Mexico to a dentist who was highly recommended by friends in Taos. Dr. Oscar Ruiz Mares has become a dear friend in the process and I can't think of anyone I would recommend more for adult dental work. He handled everything I needed done... and we're talking xrays, medications, extractions, root canals and total reconstruction.... for a fraction of what it would have cost in the states. I could not have gotten the help I needed within our current health care system. The system is broken and I have personally seen and experienced it twice in the past 12 months. I think that the best folks working within our medical communities need this reform as much as people like myself do so I'm grateful to see President Obama's health care initiative move forward. For better or worse I think it's a move in the right direction and long overdue.
I want to thank my beloved friends Ellis Paul, Stephanie Gutz, John Kurgan, Holly Duane, Jeff-Ashleigh-Ben-Sammy-Jack-Charlene Curry, Arlo Guthrie (and the rest of that beautiful family), Dr. Oscar Ruiz Mares (and his awesome staff and colleagues in Juarez), Neale Eckstein, Laurie Laba, Donald Glazer, Barb Cristea, Dr. Michael Marcus in Chicago, Joe Roth, Sam and Dan Lepinski, The Berwyn Music Mafia, my Mom and the rest of my familia, Tom Marshall, Deb Frazier, Peggy Sue Mathies, Patrick Turnmire, Roger Romero, Margaret Henn Romero (Viva Vatopia!) and many more for helping me out of yet another really tight corner.
I've got a couple of phases to go before my mouth is fully restored and it'll take another chunk of change to get that done but I am a blessed and lucky guy to have the kind friends and generous support which has gotten me through the worst of it. Thank you all for every little thing and I look forward to flashing you a big, toothy smile sometime soon.
